City Palace

The architectural superiority of the City Palace is an exotic personification of Udaipur tourism. The towering palace situated on the banks of Lake Pichola was originally built by Maharana Uday Singh II. Through an assortment of big and small palaces, courtyards, pavilions, corridors and hanging gardens, the City Palace narrates a spectacular tale of Rajasthan's royalty.

The well sculpted designs and carvings are a unique blend of Medieval, European and Chinese architecture that together uphold a remarkable and rare uniformity. The interiors of the City Palace, built entirely in granite and marble, have intricately designed mirror-work, silver-work, marble-work, inlay-work, coloured glass-work, murals and paintings, each distinctly juxtaposed on the surface of balconies, towers and cupolas. The breathtaking view of Lake Pichola from Amar Vilas, the highest point of the palace, is just the perfect icing on the cake.

Lake Pichola
Entirely manmade, the Lake Pichola in Udaipur, created in the year AD 1362 and named after the Picholi village, has the undisputed distinction of being an immensely beautiful lake in the world. The pristine beauty of this lake is enhanced further by the surrounding palaces, marble temples, family mansions and bathing ghats that are easily negotiable by boat from the City Palace.

Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir, the two islands in the midst of the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola, form a perfect backdrop for the renowned Lake Palace. While slowly drifting towards the Swaroop Sagar and Fateh Sagar Lake that are in fact connected to the Lake Pichola, the heart swells up with bliss that you seldom experience.

Fateh Sagar Lake
Originally built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 and later reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh, the Fateh Sagar Lake is an artificial lake whose crystal-clear blue waters, together with the surrounding greenery, instantly remind you of Kashmir.

Three small islands located within the periphery of the lake house interestingly built public parks and water jet fountains. For instance, Nehru Park, the name given to the largest island amongst the three, comprises a boat-shaped restaurant and a zoo that has slowly turned into a marvelous picnic spot that attracts locals and tourists alike. The Udaipur Solar Observatory, which is one of its kind in Asia, is located on the third island of the lake. Several boats are found anchored at the bottom of the Moti Magri Hill, and can be used to access these sites.

Shiv Niwas Palace
Maharana Fateh Singh is credited for giving shape to this wonderful palace called the Shiv Niwas Palace, which is located in the southern part of the City Palace Complex. Shiv Niwas Palace, a three-storied crescent-shaped building, was originally used to welcome dignitaries associated with the Mewar royal family. Today it is the best Heritage Hotel in Rajasthan in the "Heritage Grand" category that is famous as much for its unparalleled elegance as for its hospitality. Jagdish Temple
The unique Indo-Aryan style architecture dominates the facade of the Jagdish Temple, which was built in 1651 by the erstwhile ruler of Udaipur, Maharana Jagat Singh.

Located in the City Palace Complex of Udaipur, the Jagdish Temple is largely dedicated to Lord Vishnu, whose idol made of black stone is found enshrined within the temple premises. The main shrine of the temple also houses a huge brass idol of Garuda, the mount of Lord Vishnu.

Intricate sculpture and carvings are found adorning the surface of pillars, walls and ceilings of this three-tiered temple. High-end architectural work embellished on the spire, around 79 feet high, has made the Jagdish Temple a cynosure of all eyes. People who appreciate such brilliant artwork flock to this temple every day. This, along with the religious chants that percolate from the temple, makes this place a must-visit.

Monsoon Palace
Situated at the apex of the Banasdara hills of the Arravalli Mountains, the Monsoon Palace, often referred to as Sajjangarh fort, was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh of the Mewar dynasty in 1884. Built with the ultimate purpose of watching the monsoon clouds together with predicting the weather conditions, the Monsoon Palace also enabled the Maharana to view his ancestral home in Chittorgarh.

Owing to its location, the palace, built entirely in white marble, offers a bird's eye view of the Udaipur city, including lakes, palaces and even the surrounding countryside. The best time to visit is during the rainy season, when the palace seems to get engulfed in clouds; this, together with nature's exoticism, gives a feeling of otherworldliness. Tourists especially come to the Monsoon Palace to get a glimpse of the picturesque landscape created during sunset.

City Palace Museum
The museum is located within the Fateh Prakash Palace complex. It displays a diverse array of weapons, utensils, artifacts and many other things.

The collection is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Udaipur.

Sahelion Ki Bari

Built by Maharana Sangram Singh, this is a beautiful garden with large flowerbeds, lawns, pools, fountains and trees.

It offers fantastic glimpses of the lifestyle of the court-ladies.

Jag Mandir

Located in the island amid the Lake Pichola, this is a beautiful palace with elegant stone carving.

Maharana Karan Singh built this palace to give shelter to Prince Khurram the estranged son of Emperor Jahangir. Many say that, Shah Jahan was inspired by its architecture to some extent.

Eklingji

A little away from Udaipur, this is a complex housing 108 temples built of sandstone and marble.

A black stone image of Lord Vishnu and brass image of Garuda are enshrined in the one of the temples. Elaborate stone carvings adorn the temples.

Nathdwara
A legend goes into the construction of the temple here.

When the image of Lord Krishna reached the spot, the wheel of the bullock cart carrying the image sank deep into the mud and refused to move further.

It was understood that this was the God's intention that the temple be here.

Boat ride at Lake Pichola
The Lake Pichola is one of the central attractions in Udaipur. Huge forts, palaces and havelis overlook the picturesque lake.

Haldighati Pass

Haldighati is a mountain pass in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan in western India. It connects Rajsamand and Pali districts, 40 kilometres from Udaipur. The name is believed to have come from the turmeric-coloured yellow soil (Turmeric is haldi in Hindi).

The mountain pass is historically significant as the location of the historic Battle of Haldighati, which took place in 1576 between Rana Pratap Singh of Mewar and Raja Man Singh of Amber, general of the Mughal emperor Akbar.

Shopping in Udaipur

Local Transport

Local bus services are the best mode of transportation in Pune. Buses plying within and in the suburbs of the city come under the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited. State buses operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation run in almost all the important towns and cities of Maharashtra. The three national highways in Pune make it easy to reach the city by road. Shared taxis ply in the Mumbai Pune route between Dadar Circle and Pune railway station. The seating capacity of these taxis is four to five people, with charges ranging from Rs. 200 to 300 per person for a regular cab. Hiring an Ambassador or a Fiat Premier will cost you anywhere between Rs. 800 and 1,000.

It takes almost three hours to traverse the distance between Mumbai and Pune via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The services of both private and state-owned buses can be availed on this route throughout the day, every fifteen minutes. State-owned buses charge you Rs. 185 and Rs. 320 for non-AC and AC ride, respectively.
